MUGN 443: Concertmaster Practicum II

Program
Credits 1

This course is an intensive study of violin performance and leadership, specifically as they both relate to the role of the concertmaster. The class will utilize a chronological and progressive study of concertmaster solos and relevant repertoire as a base to explore the musicianship, violin playing, and leadership skills required to become an influential concertmaster. The importance of a deep understanding of phrasing, character, sound, dynamics, bowing and fingering choices, etc. will be emphasized to enhance playing and leadership interactions. Exercises directly related to the playing and leadership required in an ensemble and orchestral performance context will be central to this course. Associated skills related to communication and interactions with music director, conductor, orchestral colleagues, librarians and benefactors will be woven into the course content as well.
