MUGN 123: Foundations of Music and Medicine: Mind, Body, and Perception

This course will introduce students to the emerging field of Music and Medicine. This field comprises 3 
distinct limbs: 

  1. Music Therapy
  2. Music Medicine
  3. Performance Medicine

Upon completion of this coursework, students will have gained critical insights into the powerful effects 
of music (played or listened to) on the anatomy of the brain, physiology of the body, and the generation 
of emotions. They will also gain comprehension of the shifting healthcare field as it relates to music and 
medicine, along with a broadened understanding of the relevant literature assigned throughout this 
course. Finally, they will learn to be attentive to all risk factors leading to performance-related injuries 
and know how to prevent and remedy these from the perspective of both performer and instructor.
